Storage Tank Statistics
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that there are approximately 561,000 underground storage tanks (USTs) in the United States that store petroleum or other hazardous substances. These USTs pose a significant risk of leaking and contaminating the soil and groundwater.
This is an especially alarming threat here in Florida, where about 92 percent of our drinking water is groundwater. As as result, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection implemented one of the first petroleum cleanup rules in the nation in 1983. Since then, approximately 27,000 discharges have been reported, of which about 15,000 have been assessd and remediated, and another 12,000 are still waiting for work to be comleted.
Since 1989, HSA Golden’s principals have been instrumental in the assessment and closure of hundreds of UST sites.
