Floridians for Solar Choice is promoting a 2016 Florida constitutional amendment ballot initiative that would give Florida homeowners and businesses the right to purchase solar power directly from privately owned solar producers. Currently, solar “farms” are regulated as utilities by the Public Service Commission (PSC), creating a huge barrier in establishing solar power generation facilities that sell electricity directly end users. Past legislative efforts to overcome barriers to solar choice have been thwarted by large power companies, hence the ballot initiative. While the amendment would cap the size of the systems to two megawatts, this would be a huge step forward in displacing power generated through the combustion of fossil fuels. Politifact rates statements made on Floridians for Solar Choice’s website as “mostly true.” We at HSA Golden encourage you to log onto the www.flsolarchoice.org web site, and download/print/complete/mail the petition as described on their site. Florida is one of only five states expressly prohibiting citizens from buying electricity directly from someone other than a monopoly electric utility. This needs to be changed.
